More sexy fun and frolics abound in Mac Ahlberg’s adaption of the
Marquis de Sade’s “Justine and Juliette”. Jess Franco adapted the
story for his 1968 film “Marquis de Sade’s Justine” with Romina Power
and the scene-stealing Mercedes McCambridge. Franco’s version is more
serious and more sadistic than Ahlberg’s adaption, which is a then-modern-day
account of the two sisters Justine and Juliette being tossed into the
streets of 1975 Sweden, with Justine being the good girl who goes nowhere
fast and Juliette almost instantly becoming a prostitute who becomes quite
financially successful. Along the way the viewer is treated to beautifully lit,
photographed and executed hardcore sex scenes and much intentional humor
in the form of a bunch of over-the-hill old men chasing the pretty young women
around again and again, and all without Viagra. Ahlberg’s usual male actors
having their eyes pop out of their heads at the sight of the beautiful women
in the cast and going nutso thereafter is always fun to watch, and this is a
common staple in Ahlberg’s comedic adult films. The sex scenes between the
major cast members, except for Harry Reems, are softcore, while nearly all
of the hardcore action is among the unknowns. Nevertheless, these steamy
scenes are very satisfying, as is the acting of the two female lead actresses,
the ever-ready Maria Forsa and Anne Bie Warburg, both of whom look more beautiful
than ever here. Harry Reems, as he did in Ahlberg’s “Bel Ami”, displays a real
talent for comedy. The film slows down a little from time to time, but most of
the time there is much fun to be had.

It is not very often that adult films can be classified as refreshing and
life-affirming, but “Justine and Juliette”, as well as most of Ahlberg’s
other adult films, falls distinctly into those categories, and adult viewers
with a sense of humor and an appreciation for Ahlberg’s eye for comedic
detail will not be disappointed.
